Bill pay for small businesses with a real free tier — ACH, card, and check payments, AI bill capture, approvals, and QuickBooks and Xero sync, now owned by Xero.
Melio is the accounts-payable tool to start with when the alternative is paying bills from the bank portal. The free Go plan includes five ACH payments a month, AI bill capture, and the trick that makes Melio useful: paying a vendor who only takes ACH with your credit card, which turns a bill into float. The paid ladder is published and cheap — Core at $25 a month, Boost at $55, Unlimited at $80 with unlimited free ACH and users — and the sync to QuickBooks and Xero is what reviewers praise most. Xero completed its $2.5 billion acquisition of Melio on 15 October 2025 (trade-press reported), so if you are on Xero, expect the integration to deepen. The weaknesses are the ones you would expect from a tool priced this way: support is hard to reach by phone or chat, the approval workflow is thin next to Bill.com or Stampli, and some reviewers report failed payments without notice, so reconcile weekly. Buy Melio if you pay under roughly fifty bills a month and your books live in QuickBooks or Xero. Buy Bill.com if you need multi-step approvals and receivables in the same system, or Stampli once invoice volume is a headcount question.
Get a new AI workflow each week — many feature Melio and other tools in this category.
