OpenRouter

AI Infrastructure

A unified API and marketplace that routes requests to hundreds of models from many providers through a single endpoint and bill.

Overview

OpenRouter is a single API in front of hundreds of models — frontier, open, and niche — with one set of credentials and one invoice. It handles provider failover and lets you compare models on price and latency without integration work for each. For enterprises it is most useful for experimentation and breadth: trying many models quickly, or reaching models a primary provider does not offer. For a high-volume production workload, going direct to a provider or your own gateway is often cheaper and gives you a direct commercial relationship.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • One API for hundreds of models
  • Easy price and latency comparison
  • Automatic provider failover
  • Fast way to try new models

Cons

  • Adds a margin and a middleman to each call
  • Less ideal than going direct for steady high volume
  • No direct commercial relationship with model providers
